apart & a part

"Occasionally, as the light changes at the end of the day, I can still be overcome by the sensation, it's too late now, for anyone to visit us in the Home today." - Leonie Sheedy

apart & a part is a collaborative project with individuals who spent time in institutional and out-of-home care in Australia in the twentieth century (children's Homes and orphanages). Many of these children were harmed in care and carry these experiences into adult life.

The project references the fracturing of individual and familial identities as a result of removal and loss, but focuses on the unique identities and narratives formed as a result. apart & a part blends photography, video, archival images and objects in an attempt to explore the diversity of the care-leaver experience.

The Sheet
The Sheet

Michelle is known for her love of colour. Only after visiting Michelle for a couple of years did I notice that she owned no white clothes or sheets. Of course, she replied.

The Lost Objects
The Lost Objects

These objects are part of a larger collection held in CLAN's humble Orphanage Museum in Bankstown. They have been lovingly collected from orphanages and children’s Homes around Australia, but have no known owners. Having survived the historical silence surrounding care practices, they express evidence of absence, rather than the other way around.

The Space Between the Stars
The Space Between the Stars

Jessie’s twin passed away at birth. She once read me a short manuscript she had produced about her life for a writing group. Her lived experience is rich, remarkable even. But one line echoed for me, “I wonder if she had survived, if I would feel less alone”. We made this work as a mark of respect.

The Waltz

Siblings Trevor and Debbie dance again, for the first time in over thirty years.

Trevor's Archive
Trevor's Archive

When I first met Trevor he told me that he had recently lost a portion of his personal archive in a small house fire. I was intrigued by his use of the word ‘archive’ to describe his belongings. He told me that he had fastidiously collected and archived his everyday life in the absence of anyone else to do so. I was astounded at the archival foresight of his teenage self.

We decided to photograph what remained of his archive, including an extensive collection of dancing awards.
